Frequently asked questions
Can NRIs invest in Indian mutual funds?
Yes, through an NRE or NRO account and after completing KYC and FATCA formalities, subject to each fund house’s acceptance of your country of residence.
What documents do I need?
Typically PAN, passport, visa or residence permit, overseas address proof, passport-size photographs and bank details for your NRE or NRO account. We give you a checklist.
Can I invest from the USA or Canada?
Some fund houses do not accept new investments from residents of these countries, mainly because of regulatory requirements. We will confirm which options are currently open to you.
Can I repatriate my money?
Investments made from an NRE account are generally repatriable. Investments made from an NRO account are subject to prescribed limits and tax compliance. Please check the current rules with us.
Do I need to visit India?
Not necessarily. Much of the process can be completed digitally or by courier, and our team can coordinate with a trusted family member in India if required.
How is tax handled for NRIs?
Tax is generally deducted at source on redemptions at rates that depend on the type of scheme and holding period, and a tax treaty may apply in your country of residence. Please consult a qualified tax professional.
